The free event is sponsored by the Fayette County Veterans Affairs Office and the Hopwood AMVETS.

Uniontown, PA - Fayette County Veterans Affairs will host its annual Veterans Appreciation Picnic Saturday, Aug. 13.

Free to all Fayette County veterans and their families, the event takes place 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the AMVETS George C. Marshall Post #103; 123 Buttermilk Lane, Hopwood.

“Every year, we like to take the opportunity to break bread with and thank our veterans for their service,” Bensen said. “The picnic is a way for us to bring our veterans and their families together for a day of camaraderie and celebration of their service to our country.”

Bensen said the event has taken place in some form for “many, many years,” having only been disrupted in 2020 by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Two years ago, we didn’t get to do this. Most of our veterans didn’t see each other for more than a year,” Bensen said. “Last year, we had a larger, day-long celebration out at the Fayette County Fairgrounds to say ‘welcome back,’ but this year we’re going back to the more intimate, casual picnic setting.”

The picnic will also feature a special performance by the VFW Post 8543 Band, led by Bandmaster Rich Miller. Bensen thanked Miller and AMVETS Commander Stanley Angel for their support and dedication to the event’s success.

In addition to the Fayette County Veterans Affairs Office staff, local veteran organizations will be represented at the picnic, but not as vendors, Bensen added.

“They’ll be there if our vets have questions about resources, but they’ll be there as guests, enjoying burgers and hotdogs with the rest of us,” he said.

Bensen’s office is planning a Veterans Expo in September; details of which are to be determined.
